Deep Dive into the Creative Process

Writing novels is not just a passion; it is a journey filled of self-discovery. Each story I craft is a reflection of my thoughts, experiences, and the world around me.

In this blog post, I will take you through the intricate layers of my worlds and the creative process that brings them to life. Whether you are an aspiring writer or a reader curious about the behind-the-scenes of storytelling, I hope to provide insights that resonate with you.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Genesis of an Idea

Every novel begins with a spark of inspiration. This could be a fleeting thought, a conversation overheard, or a vivid dream.

For example, my upcoming series, Palindrome, is based on the many struggles I've faced in regards to mental illness and overcoming trauma, all in an effort to break free of the box I had locked myself within. The relationships that have come and gone in my life and the world that has shaped my upbringing was the ignition for my imagination, birthing a story of love, loss, and redemption.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Finding Inspiration

  • Yourself: Engaging in self-reflection allows us to explore our own narratives, revealing the complexities of what it means to be human. These personal experiences become the foundation for our stories, enabling us to write authentically about what we know. The greater our understanding of ourselves, the richer our storytelling becomes.
  • People: Observing the interactions and emotions of others often provides the foundation for my characters. Each person has a story worth telling. Whether it’s the subtle exchange of glances between strangers in a coffee shop, the heartfelt laughter shared among friends, or the quiet beats of contemplation of someone lost in thought, these observations become the building blocks for character development.
  • Art and Music: The emotional resonance of art, whether visual or auditory, has the remarkable ability to tap into the depths of human experience, stirring memories, desires, and fears that may lie dormant within us. Through the brush of a painting or the melodies of a symphony, creators express complex emotions and narratives that resonate deeply with audiences.

Developing Characters

Once I have a story idea, the next step is to develop characters that will bring the narrative to life. Characters are the heart of any story, and I strive to create multidimensional individuals that readers can connect with.

Character Profiles
I often start with character profiles that include:

  • Background: Where do they come from? What experiences have shaped them?
  • Motivations: What drives them? What do they want to achieve?
  • Flaws: No one is perfect. Flaws make characters relatable and real.

For instance, in Palindrome, the protagonist is a man grappling with the burden of his powers and how they had led to his constant abuse and suffering. His journey of self-discovery and connection to others is central to the plot, and his flaws make his journey all the more compelling.

World-Building

Creating a believable world is crucial, especially in genres like fantasy or historical fiction. The setting should feel like a character in its own right, influencing the plot and the characters' actions.

Techniques for Effective World-Building

  • Research: I delve into historical records, cultural practices, and geographical features to create an authentic backdrop.
  • Sensory Details: I incorporate sights, sounds, and smells to immerse readers in the world. For example, in Palindrome, the setting is a futuristic, but still modernized depiction of our real world. However, the fictional difference is that individuals began developing metahuman superpowers, giving rise to heroes, corporations, and corrupt governments seeking fame, wealth, control, or all of the above.
  • Consistency: Keeping the rules of the world consistent helps maintain immersion. If superpowers exist, their limitations should be clear.

The Writing Process

Writing a novel is a marathon, not a sprint. I have developed a process that helps me stay organized and motivated throughout the journey.

Steps in My Writing Process

  1. Outlining: I create a rough outline of the plot, including major events and character arcs. This serves as a roadmap for my writing.
  2. Drafting: I focus on getting the words down without worrying about perfection. The first draft is often messy, but it is essential for building the story.
  3. Revising: After completing the draft, I take a break before revisiting it with fresh eyes. This stage involves refining the language, tightening the plot, and deepening character development.
  4. Feedback: Sharing my work with trusted individuals provides valuable insights. Their feedback helps me identify areas for improvement.
  5. Final Edits: The last step involves polishing the manuscript, checking for grammar, punctuation, and consistency.

Overcoming Writer's Block

Every writer faces the dreaded writer's block at some point. It can be frustrating, but I have found several strategies to overcome it.

Tips for Beating Writer's Block

  • Change of Scenery: Sometimes, a new environment can spark creativity. I often write in different locations, whether it’s a café, park, or library.
  • Indulgence: I either listen to music or watch videos, films, and shows to expand my palette of different forms of storytelling. This helps to break the mental block and widen your horizons on the endless possibilities of our creative minds.
  • Reading: Diving into a good book can inspire new ideas and reignite my passion for storytelling.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Role of Editing

Editing is where the magic happens. It transforms a rough draft into a polished piece of literature. I approach editing with a critical eye, focusing on both macro and micro elements.

Key Aspects of Editing

  • Structural Edits: I assess the overall flow of the story, ensuring that the pacing is consistent and that the plot makes sense.
  • Line Edits: This involves refining sentences for clarity and impact. I look for repetitive phrases and awkward constructions.
  • Proofreading: The final step is checking for typos and grammatical errors. A fresh set of eyes can be invaluable at this stage.

Publishing Journey

Once the manuscript is polished, the next step is publishing. This can be a daunting process, but understanding the options available can make it more manageable.

Traditional vs. Self-Publishing

  • Traditional Publishing: This route involves submitting manuscripts to literary agents or publishers. It can be competitive, but it often provides more resources for marketing and distribution.
  • Self-Publishing: This option allows for greater creative control and faster publication. However, it requires authors to handle marketing and distribution themselves.

I chose to self-publish my latest novel, which allowed me to maintain creative control over the cover design and marketing strategy.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Marketing My Novels

Marketing is an essential part of the publishing process. I have learned that building an audience takes time and effort, but it is rewarding.

Effective Marketing Strategies

  • Social Media: I use platforms like Instagram and TikTok to connect with readers and share updates about my writing journey.
  • Author Website: Having a dedicated website allows me to showcase my work and provide a space for readers to learn more about my novels. Hence, the website you're reading this blog post on!
  • Book Signings and Events: Participating in local events helps me connect with readers and promote my books.
